The global initiative on sports development has lauded the FCT DRTS director, Dr. AbdulLateef Bello over the establishment of a full-fledged sports unit. The group’s spokesperson Zainab Mainasara made this commendation during an appraisal intelligence roundtable in Abuja.
The new sports unit will help to make the officers participate in all civil service and military sporting events.
She called for the proper funding of the unit as well as procurement of modern sporting facilities that could make the unit meet up.
“The DRTS has a reputation in collaborative efforts but the adequate funding of the unit will make it effective. Today, the Police and Military have well-established sports units, therefore the necessitation by the new director is in line with standards. The staff of the unit especially the head must also bring up new initiatives towards exposing the staff to general sports, especially during competitions. We want to generally say that the initiative is timely, and will go a long way. Marathon has been carried out by the defense headquarters which normally involved other uniform agencies, the drts with a full-fledged unit could also organize similar events in near future”, she added.
The spokesperson further added that sports remain the only uniting tool in the country.
“The DRTS which comprises different Nigerian ethnic groups could further promote oneness through periodical organizing of sporting events. The drts sports unit is the first in the country among the residual traffic agencies which have the conference of road traffic officers and chief executive officers as an umbrella body.
” The head of the drts sports unit through the support of the director could one day organize a sporting competition for zonal commands in the FCT and in near future for the entire conference. We in the global movement value sports hence this eulogy on the new DRTS director, and we hope our advice towards equipping and proper financing of the unit will be taken and considered. Presently, the drts has some skeletal image problem, especially with motorists as a result of the services they render, we can together redeem this image through sports that people would love to be fully involved”, she noted.
