The Federal Ministry of Health and some development partners held a sensitization rally in Utako Market and some parts of the Federal Capital Territory to mark the World Breastfeeding week celebration in Abuja.
The sensitization rally kicked off from the Federal secretariat to other parts of Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the Head Nutrition Division Federal Ministry of Health, Temidayo Odebunmi said exclusive breastfeeding contributes to the growth of the nation.
“The sensitization rally was organized to educate the members of the public on the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding. The impact has a long-term effect on the mother, child and society at large.”
Dr Temi also encouraged husbands to support their wives and to exclusively breastfeed their children as there are lots of benefits inherent in the practice.
“Exclusive breastfeeding also prevents disease for both mother and children.
There are available nutrients in the composition of breast milk that aids in driving sickness away from the body. Research also indicates that any women who breastfed their children do not easily contact cancer of the breast”.
A Trader in Utako market, Amarachi Emmanuel commended the organisers for sensitizing the public about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding.
” I am very happy to be part of the celebration to mark the World breastfeeding week celebration. I will spread the message to people in my community”.
Another Trader Busola Rahman said through the awareness program on breastfeeding, she is duly informed of how to breastfeed her children when she finally gets married.
The World Breastfeeding Week for 2022 is from August 1st to August 7th and focuses on strengthening the capacity of actors that have to protect, promote and support breastfeeding across different levels of society.
