INEC has appealed to citizens who have applied for fresh registration, and transfer replacement of PVCs to obtain their copy to avoid last minute rush as the commission is finalizing arrangement for election.
The electoral body made the disclosure in a press release signed by Festus Okoye the National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voters Education Committee.
According to him, the commission has reviewed preparations for the Federal Capital Territory FCT Area Council elections coming up on the 12th of February 2022, and other outstanding elections for the year.
He indicated that a total of 475 candidates that are sponsored by all 18 political parties are vying for the 68 constituencies involving six Area Council chairman and 62 councillors in the FCT.
“FCT is the only part of Nigeria that INEC conducts Local Government elections.The Commission has scheduled stakeholders engagement meetings as per traditional as the following, Tuesday 18th January 2022 for political parties, Wednesday 19th January 2022 for civil Society organizations CSOs, Thursday 20th January 2022 Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, Friday 21st January 2022 for Media Organizations.”
The Commission announced pending Bye-Elections in six states due to the vacancies declaration by the Honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives and Honourable Speakers of some State Houses of Assembly and there are -Akure North/Akure South Federal Constituency, Ondo State.-Jos North/Nassau Federal Constituency, plateau State. Pankshin South State constituency, plateau State.-Ogoja/Yara Federal Constituency, Cross River State.-Akpabuyo State Constituency Cross River State.-Ngor-Okpala State Constituency Imo State. In which the election will hold on Saturday 26th February 2022 immediately after the FCT Area Council elections to enable the commission to clear most of the Bye-Elections, and focus on the Ekiti and Osun Governorship elections, and also on the ongoing 2023 general election preparations.
The commission further informed the political parties to conduct their primaries and resolve all dispute that may arise from the primaries between 26th January to 5th February 2022.”The official election notification will be published on Monday 24th of January, as February 9th will be the last day for the submission of the nomination of candidates list through the Commission’s online nomination portals. With polling agent names submission for the election of the electoral officer of the local government is on or before 12th February 2022.”The commission also said that the access code for the nomination forms shall be available from 5th February 2022 for collection at the Commission headquarters, while also letting the political parties know that their campaign will end on the 24th February 2022.Meanwhile the Commission has decided to combine the Ekiti East 1 State Constituency election with the Governorship election in Ekiti, which is to hold on the 18th of June 2022.
