The President of the Association of Lawyers from Conflict Zones is urging the Benue State Government to put a stop to the invasion of Ukpute community in Oju Local Government Area of Benue State, by the Bonta Militia and their collaborators.
The President of the association John Owulo disclosed this in a statement .
The group of Lawyers from the conflict zone is calling the Benue State Government to as a matter of urgency to put in place ways, means and process that could lead to permanent establishment of security post between Ukpute and Bonta community.
“The Government should deploy security personnel to the conflict area. The killing and slaughtering of women and children has gone unabated, this same conflict led to the killing of a Captain and eleven soldiers earlier this year by the same Bonta Militia group.
On Monday June 14, 2021,a fight broke out when the regroup Bonta Militia invaded Ukpute when they were not satisfied with the terms and conditions of the peace settlement by the state government”.
The group stated that they beleive that the deployment of security personnel will reduce further lost of life and destruction of properties, and the mass suffering and displacements especially of women and children will be minimized”.
The group further stated that the initiative will send a needed signal to the Militia group, who have acted with impunity by repeatedly frustrating government efforts at restoring peace through boundary demarcation and had gotten away with it.
” Government silence in the face of serial violation of instructions has the potential of misleading people. We sincerely believe a robust security presence in the conflict area will not only bring to an end the unfolding tragedy, but also serve as a deterrent to trouble makers and violators of peace agreements.”
