The Nigeria Government is working in collaboration with Italy, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO),to phase out ozone depleting refrigerants.
Dr. Mohammed Abubakar, the Minister of Environment, stated this during the inauguration of the stage two of the hydrochlorofluoro carbon phase out management plan (HPMP) project in Abuja.
The minister noted that having successfully completed the stage one of the Hydrochlorofluoro carbon phase out management plan (HPMP) project, the
second stage of the project was approved by the Executive Committee of the Multilateral Fund, (MCF) for the implementation of the Montreal protocol, with the objective to completely phase out ozone depleting blowing agent, and refrigerants in the foam and refrigation sectors.
” With this commitment we are to phase out 51.35 percent of ozone depleting refrigerants consumptions by 2023.
The minister further disclosed that the strategy for implementing the second phase stage was determined when we considered the following factors.
“The level of reduction in ozone depleting refrigerants imported into the country, also the market trends in the use of alternatives to ozone depleting refrigerants, and then the need to mitigate the potentials and negative impacts on production technology.
We need to continue in the phasing out of the ozone depleting refrigerants consumption in the numerous sectors in the country.”
