
Six girls have won scholarship award at the 2021 International Women’s day event and award organized by the Association of
Professional Women’s Engineers of Nigeria(APWEN).
The 1st position from the competition comes from the North West zone, while the second position is from South West, and the third position is from North Central.
Two student of Junior secondary school, Pasali, Kuje, Abuja, represented the North central.
Two student, Abubakar Rabiya, and Attah Merit, who were recipients of the scholarship were happy to receive the award, and promised to give their best in their education.
Speaking at the event, the President of Association of Professional Women’s Engineers of Nigeria( APWEN), Engineer Funmilola Ojelade, said there is need for gender equality in all sectors of the economy.
She added that her association will give room for girls to exhibit their potentials.
” We are moving and making progress.We are celebrating women through young school girls, and awarding scholarship to six school girls. The award is to encourage public schools on the use of Technology”.
” This is surely an advocacy, and we are moving from where we used to be, in order to make considerable progress. We are celebrating young school girls, who will end up as tomorrow’s leader. We are also celebrating men who have supported women in achieving their potentials”.
The Nigerian Society of Engineer President, Engineer Babagana Mohammed, encouraged women to challenge the stereotype in all sector of the economy.
She added that women have been great asset to the country, by showing exemplary leadership in other sector of the economy.
“Women have proven their worth over time, and brought pride to the country. They need to be supported so as to unleash their potential, and not be a burden to the society. The likes of Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, and Amina Mohammed have brought pride to the country in the global space.”
In the same vein, he added that more girls should be encouraged to go into STEM.
“We need more girls to explore the world of STEM. APWEN should be commended in this regards, as they have been doing much in this regard. We implore you not to give up, and keep mentoring more girls.”
He further noted that Nigerian women should not be subjected to any other form of violence or oppression.
