The Programme Coordinator of The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD), Ms Victoria Udoh has enjoined the public to join the campaign for increased women participation in politics.
She stated this on the backdrop of a 1-Day Consultative Meeting on Mapping of Influential Men Leaders/Stakeholders to Increase Women participation in Politics.
The Programme is organised by (Centre LSD) with support from National Democratic Institute (NDI).
She stated that the champions will become change agents, in shifting cultures within political parties, and other relevant institutions, to allow for more meaningful participation of women at all levels.
“The consultative meeting will bring together Civil Society Organizations, religious groups, and women’s rights groups/coalition with the aim of selecting and enlisting Male champions in the campaign for female inclusion in politics in Nigeria.”
According to the Project Coordinator, the program “Engaging Male Champions for Improved Participation of Women in Politics – Supporting Advancement of Gender Equality (SAGE)”, has become necessary following the patriarchal nature of the Nigerian society and the consequent dominance of the male gender in key positions, either appointed or elected.
” We need to enlist and mobilize influencers/male politicians and champions/leaders who will champion, prioritize, and support the efforts to promote women inclusion and participation in politics”.
