The Coordinator of Africa Health Budget Network, Dr Aminu Magashi Garba said the sum of 4 million dollars have been allocated annually from 2017-2020 for the procurement of Contraceptives for the public sector.
He therefore called for more funding for the procurement of Contraceptives for members of the public.
He made the disclosure at a webinar on the topic; Nigeria’s Family Planning Commitment ; Key Findings from the use of the Motion Tracker in 2019 and 2020.
According to him, there is need to ensure sustainable financing for the National Family planning program in the Country.
“There is funding gap in Family planning in 2020. We need more advocacy, government need to put in more money for the program. We need to ensure that the funding gap is identified and addressed annually “.
In the same vein, he added that there is need to improve access and create enabling environment for Sexual and Reproductive Health services across Nigeria.
“We need to contribute to improve preparedness and response where humanitarian crisis occurs. Though in time past, we have been in track by collaborating with Federal Ministry of Health, Youth, and that of Education, in designing appropriate Sexual and Reproductive Health message.”
Dr Magashi noted that 3,000 Community Health care workers have been trained to deliver range of Contraceptives, and also suport task shifting by 2020.
The Coordinator explained that some of the challenges experienced in Family Planning tracking include; overall reduction of health sector budget, making it difficult to make access for Family Planning budget .
The Director and Head of Reproductive Health Division, Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Kayode Afolabi said there is need to improve financing gap in the health sector.
He added that there is need for more advocacy in order to reach out to more Nigerians.
“We need to get involved more in youth friendly services that is targeted to a particular demography. This services is usually a tested approach”.
